WordPlay is offered through participating preschools in the St. Johns neighborhood of Jacksonville.
At your child's own preschool — WordPlay comes to the classroom, so there is nothing extra for you to drive to.
Your child joins one session a week, during the school day. There are four session times each week; the day and time are set with your child's center.
30 minutes — long enough to fall into a story, short enough to hold every young child's attention.
Children ages 2–5, in groups of no more than 12, so every child gets heard.
12 children per session, four sessions a week — 48 places in total. Your child attends 1 session per week. Parents are welcome — as participants! Once a group of 12 is full, the small group is the whole point, so we do not add extra chairs; the next opening is the following term.
Sue Hepker has spent a career bringing books to young children — in South Africa, in Chicago, and now in the St. Johns neighborhood of Jacksonville. In small groups, with real books, songs, poems, and a bear puppet named Benji.
Won the international IBBY–Asahi Reading Promotion Award for The Little Library, a picture-book curriculum now translated into 18 African languages.
Author of several children’s books. Her 2016 poetry collection Do It Again! is the basis of the WordPlay program.
Former executive director of two respected Chicago early-literacy programs, Hug-a-Book and the Kohl Story Bus.
Has trained teachers for the Erikson Institute, National Louis University, Chicago Public Schools, and Head Start centers.
Honors degree in English Literature (University of South Africa) and a Teacher’s Licentiate in Speech and Drama (Trinity College, Dublin).
Runs her language and literacy program in several Jacksonville preschools.
